, TN. Robert Samuel Ayers was a share-croper, and lived for sometime in north Alabama, in Madison, County.
From what I have been able to piece together, from the census records, and the marriage record, I don't think he
moved there until after he and Laura Pope married, in Franklin County, TN. Also, in the marriage record, he was
listed as Richard, but that is definately a mistake. Aunt Sallie Ayers Benson could remember him, and also, in
all of the other records he was Robert. He later moved back to Franklin Co., and is buried in the Franklin Cemetery,
located on Hwy. 50, accross from the Broadview School.

According to Aunt Sallie Ayers Benson, Clarence and Thelma Gulley were married, as they
sat is the car, outside the Lexie Cross Roads Baptist Church, by Joel Vanzant, who was the Justice of the Peace,
on October 29, 1922. She said that she and Uncle Frank Benson, her husband, were the wittnesses.
Peggy Ayers Rollins remembers:
Clarence, or Granddaddy Ayers (to all his grandchildren), was a merchant in Winchester, Tennessee, and for many
years, owned his own grocery store, Ayers and Sons', which was located on 1st Ave SW. But, before he bought the
store in the early 1950's, he worked there for a while, for the previous owner, Ed Hawkersmith. At that time it
was called Eighth Ave Grocery. He also worked for Farmers Hardware, before that, and had been a peddler, selling
dry goods and groceries, for Walker Grocery Store, in the rural communities, and was also a farmer.
When his health begin to declined, due to a bad back, and serious stomach problems, he had to give up farming and
worked in sales for the rest of his work years. It was told by him and also his sisters, that one of the reasons
for his stomach condition, was, that as a small child, he had eaten the glass from a broken light globe. As he
chewed it, he would say," listen to it crunch, listen to it crunch."
About 1966, he underwent surgery, because he could not keep food down. It was discovered then that his esophagus
had stretched to about eight times its normal size, and that he had massive scar tissue around the opening of his
stomach. He had been living on raw eggs for a long time, and was very thin, but after the surgery, he was able
to enjoy eating normally, and even put on a few pounds. At first, when he started gaining weight, he would complain,
"these old cheap pants are shinking." We would all laugh.
Around the early part of the 1970's, he started to loose his sight, very quickly, and had to sell the store. He
continued to work there for a short while, but then it was discovered that he had a tumor on the optic nerve. He
underwent surgery to have it removed, but he was not able to regain his sight.
He was a good natured man, who loved his family very much. He loved to tease, and had a big smile, especially if
he was teasing his grandchildren. I think we must have all had the nickname of "tadpole" at some time
or other. He was a very honest, good Christian man, and never spoke evil against anyone, that I ever heard. I remember
one time when I was really upset with an older woman, about something she had said or done, He told me to always
show respect to my elders, and I never forgot that, although, I may not have always been good about keeping to
it.
Some special memories for me are:
When I was seven years old, I wanted my own handbag so bad, because some of my friends in the first grade had one,
and on Easter Sunday, when we went to Nannie and Grandday Ayers' house, Granddad told me to go look on the bed,
and see what I had. There was the little white handbag, and it was my very first, and he had bought it for me for
Easter. I felt like a big girl then.
Getting to go into the grocery store with Dad, and Granddad letting me get a Grape Nehi out of the drink box, which,
by the way, was a Coke Cola ice box, that had two doors on the top, that open on each end of the box, and it was
kept cold by putting a big block of ice in it. Sometimes I got to go to the ice plant to get ice with Dad for it.
Getting to take a bag of hamburgers to the store on Saturday night, that Mom had cooked for Nannie, Granddad, Dad,
and Floyd, because they all worked late on Saturday night, but before that, Floyd would meet Phillip and me half
way. Getting to go and help in the Store after school, when I got a little older.
The way that Granddad loved to tease , and his big smile, that just lite up his face.
Knowing that he loved me, and hearing him say so , earlier in the night, just before he
passed from this mortal life.
All of these are sweet and precious memories.
Trey Rollins:
Grandaddy Ayers- I remember he was blind, small statured, and talkative. It seems like he always wore button up
shirts, dress shoes, and sometimes suspenders. When he went out he wore a hat like in those old movies. He and
Nanny seemed to be about the same size.

Nannie was a sweet, pretty, little lady. She always wore her hair pulled straight back in a 'bun', and when she
went to church, she would wear gloves and a hat, and she always had on 'earbob's',( which were what most people
called earrings then) with a matching necklace. Her last few years, she wore her hair short.
I use to love to spend the night at Nannie's house. She was a good cook, and I remember how she loved anything
with lemon flavor. She would have a lemon custard ice cream, lemon flavored sugar cookies, lemon cake....well you
get the picture. She loved lemon. I also remember her telling me, that if you didn't know what to cook that day,
to decide what kind of potatoes you wanted, and plan around that.
We always went there for Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and those were special times. On Easter, we would
spend all afternoon hiding eggs, and if it rained it didn't stop us, we just hid them in the house. Sometimes,
they got hidden a little to well, and that wasn't very pleasent for Nannie and Grandad, when they would start to
smell, and she would find them stuck somewhere in the house, where we had not found them. But, whatever the holiday,
we always had a feast, and Nannie would always be the last one to eat. She was running around trying to make sure
everyone else had what they wanted first.
All of us who knew her, and any of our other family members who had passed on, have special memories of her and
them.

Notes on William Clayton (Buster) AYERS:
Granddad Ayers-
I will always remember Granddad waking up early in the morning to shave. I used to get
up and "shave" with him, using my fingernails to scrape the shaving cream off until they bought my a
play razor. Another thing I remember about Granddad is that he always dressed neatly. Even if he was doing yard
work, he had on slacks and a button-up shirt. He was usually pretty jovial but could be stern at times, like when
he threatened to take a belt to me and Yuri for making too much noise after we were supposed to be asleep. But
even if he was a little irritated, it didn't last long. Probably the most important thing I can recall about him
now that I'm an adult is that he loved Grandma. I remember him leaning over and kissing her good-bye on his way
to work when I was little. He looked at me and said, " I love your Grandma." It is just one little memory
but I never forgot it.

William Clayton Ayers
Feb. 16, 1924-Aug 23, 2001
The greatest man I have ever known, was my Dad. He was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Franklin County., Tennessee to Clarence
and Thelma Gulley Ayers.
He learned about hard work at a young age. When his Dad became ill, and while he, "Buster" was only a
teenager, he went to work on the family farm, to help his parents, which meant that he would deny himself a high
school education, but through his hard work, the family farm was saved.
On Dec. 20, 1941, he married the girl of his dreams, his one and only true love, Ruth Hood. Together, they raised
four children, Floyd, Peggy, Phillip and Mechele.
He became very popular with all the nieces who came to spend the night and were treated to "Uncle Busters"
homemade biscuits, on Saturday mornings. And on Sunday evenings, he would spend hours playing dominoes with us
kids, as Mom cooked supper. To Peggy and Phillip, he was our "Pop-ta-doodlie-bop."
Going to town with Dad, was never a 'hurry up and get what you need and go home' kind of trip, because Dad never
went anywhere without finding someone he knew, to talk to. He knew everyone, it seemed, and he never met a stranger
in his life. He loved people, and was a very respected man.
He was truely a man of great honesty and integrity, a man without guile. He leaves for his children, grandchildren,
and great grandchildren, a great leagacy, his good example.
In my last conversation with him, he told me how he had tried to live by the example, of Our Lord Jesus Christ,
and that he did the best he could. I told him, that I had read one day, that "the greatest gift a man can
give his children, is to love their Mother." He smiled and said, "I always have, and I always will."
