Notes on #4 (James Daniel HOOD):

The following, is taken from a letter between William Floyd Ayers, and sister Peggy Ann Ayers Rollins:

James Daniel Hood died 29 Oct. 1929, and I don't know if they lived in Rhea County, at that time or not, but I assume that they did. (They lived on their farm in the Big Springs Community of Meigs County. James Daniel Hood was standing up, driving a wagon pulled by a team of horses. The horses spooked at something and jumped. He fell backward and struck his head on a farm implement being carried in the wagon and died a few days later after being carried home and put to bed. This I got from several sources, including his grandson, John Austin Moon, b. Jan. 2, 1919, who visited him on his death bed. F.A.) Mother said that by the time the letter came to Granddad Hood (James Cleveland, then living in Jackson Co., AL., south of the Tennessee River.), that he had already been buried, but that Granddad went anyway, and that he went back again in the spring, and when he returned home that time, he brought Great Grandma (Margaret Rebecca Hood) with him. Mother said that she stayed there with them for about three weeks, but that she wanted to go back home, and would have go back sooner, but it took time for the letter to get back to Uncle John to come for her, and that he came by boat, and took her back home. (I called Mother for clarification about this. Granddad Hood brought her in by boat, which he paddled up Coon Creek from the Caisson place. He had prearranged with Uncle John, who also lived in Jackson Co. across the Tennessee River from our grandparents, to pick her up in three weeks. When she wanted to leave early, they pretended to write a letter to Uncle John to come and get her. Mother's oldest brother, Robert was sent toward the post office with instructions to tear the letter up, instead of mailing it, which he did, because they wanted Grandma Hood to stay longer. When the appointed time came for Uncle John to take her back home to Meigs Co., Tennessee, in his car, Granddad Hood took her in a wagon to Coffee's Ferry on the Tennessee River to meet John. F.A.) Margaret Rebecca Emory Coke Hood, died 28 Oct, 1937, in Meigs County. (She and James Daniel are buried at Good Hope Cemetery. F.A.)

End Notes

James Daniel HOOD and Margaret Rebecca EMORY were married on 12 Jan 1876 in Meigs Co., TN.

Notes on James Daniel HOOD:

Margaret Rebecca EMORY (daughter of Joseph EMORY and Rebecca COGBURN) was born on 18 Mar 1855 in , , Tennessee. She died on 28 Oct 1937 in , Meigs , Tennessee. She was buried in , Meigs , Tennessee.

Taken from a letter between William Floyd Ayers, and his sister Peggy Ann Ayers Rollins:

(Peggy)
In 1870 Rhea Co. Census:
First, I found Rufus Hood, (bro. of James Daniel) and
his family, and in fact, James Daniel was 15 at that
time, and living in the same house.
Rufus Hood 32
Susan 23
Margaret 6
Sarah 3
Charles 1
James D. 15 Brother

The next house was John and Mary Jane Boles.
John Boals 31
Mary Jane 21
George 2
Malissa J 8/12

A few more houses away was the George Boals house, where Rebecca Emory (our Gr-Gr-Grandmother) was living. She was 49 and it said she was keeping house. I cannot help but wonder if maybe Polly Boals was her sister. Just something to keep in mind, but I haven't found the marriage for them so, I don't know what Polly's maiden name was.

The next house was Daniel Boals and his wife Luvena, and he was another son of George and Polly. Then, several more houses away, maybe miles away, were Great Grandma (Margaret Rebecca Emory Coke Hood) and her first husband, James L Coke.

They were married 10 Feb. 1869 (In Rhea Co.). At that time, he was 26, and she was 15. Aunt (Mary) Isabelle (Bell) (Stanley) was born sometime that year I have heard two stories, about what happened to James Coke. Willie Ruth Ziegler Conner (b. June 17, 1922), daughter of Aunt Hassie, said all she can remember hearing was that he was working or something away from home with another man, and that he was killed by Indians. She said that the two men's bodies were found, and that since he never returned, that G Grandma always figured that it was him.

Then, Mother (Annie Ruth Hood Ayers, b. Nov. 14, 1924) said that she had always heard that he had gone west to look for a place to live, and was killed, and that it was assumed by Indians.

Floyd: (What Mother told me is that Great Grandma Margaret Rebecca Emory Coke Hood received a letter from James Coke mailed from Missouri telling her to sell their possessions and that he would be sending money for her and the baby to travel west to join him. That was the last she heard from him. It was speculated that he might have been killed by Indians. If he died in Missouri around 1870, it would not have been at the hands of Indians, because hostilities between whites and Indians was much further west by that time. If he was killed in Missouri it would most likely have been at the hands of outlaws or lawmen. This was during the era of the James-Younger Gang and many similar gangs of former Confederate guerrillas, who continued the fight against Union railroads and bankers. Missouri was a very dangerous state to be in after the Civil War. We need to see if James Cope was in the Civil War and which side he was on. He was probably Confederate, as were Rufus and Joseph Hood. We need to check Rhea Co. court records for that era to see if he was declared legally dead. If so, there might be a record of the circumstances of his disappearance in the evidence presented. F.A.)

Willie Ruth (Ziegler Conners, age 80) also said that G Grandma was entitled to an Indian claim, but that she had a small daughter, and no way to travel to sign her claim.

Floyd: (This would have been between 1869 and 1876, when she married James Daniel Hood. This claim would likely have been for settlement with Cherokee descendants for the land taken in Tennessee and other Southeastern states. We need to check the Cherokee rolls and applications (if available) for Margaret Rebecca's siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, who might have succeeded in enrolling. F.A.) Willie Ruth said that she had looked for papers which would have that information , but had not had any success in locating them.

Another story was that Great Grandma (Margaret Rebecca Emory Hood) liked to argue,
and that one time Great Grandpa was up on the roof fixing it, and that she was arguing with him about
something, and that he was totally ignoring her, and just kept working and whistling, so she picked up
something and throw at him.

(The version of the story that I heard was that it was our Granddad James Cleveland Hood on the roof. F.A.) James Daniel HOOD and Margaret Rebecca EMORY had the following children:

10 i. Mary Isabelle COKE Hood, born in 1870; married John B STANLEY, about 1909, , , Tennessee; died in 1957.
11 ii. Anna Rebecca HOOD, born on 6 Feb 1879, , Rhea, Tennessee; married Casual Harmon JOHNSON, about 1894, , , Tennessee; died on 9 Dec 1894, , Meigs, Tennessee.
12 iii. John Spencer HOOD, born on 9 May 1883, , Meigs, Tennessee; married Alice Lovella WILSON, about 1907, , , Tennessee; died on 9 Feb 1970, Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee.
13 iv. James Cleveland HOOD, born on 28 Dec 1886, , Meigs , Tennessee; married Myrtle VARNER, on 29 Oct 1911, Meigs Co., TN; died on 31 Jan 1974, , Franklin, Tennessee.
14 v. Hattie Ethel HOOD, born on 7 Mar 1889, , Meigs, Tennessee; married James Jacob MOON, about 1909, , , Tennessee; died on 30 Jan 1985, , Meigs, Tennessee.

5. Robert LaFayette HOOD (James-1) was born in Jul 1854 in , Rhea, Tennessee. He died after 1910. Taken from a letter between Floyd Ayers and sister Peggy Ayers Rollins:

One last thing that Mark Ziegler told me, was that he can remember going with his mother, across the river, to see Uncle 'Bob' Hood. He said that Uncle 'Bob'... Robert Lafayette, was a big, jovial man, and
that this was probably in the mid 1920's.

Notes on #13 (James Cleveland HOOD)

Told to Annie Ruth Hood Ayers, by her Dad, James Cleveland Hood:

James Cleveland and his brother John went to visit his Grandmother Hood (Rosannah Cline Hood) one Christmas, when he was about 8 or 9 years old. He said his mother had made some pies and cakes and put them in a bushel basket and they slipped a pole through the handles of the basket, to carry it. He said that two of the uncles were there at the time, and that his Grandmother was full blood Cherokee.

This story was told to Peggy Ayers Rollins by her Uncle Woodrow Hood:

"When Dad (James Cleveland) was younger, he and his brother John got into some kind of disagreement, so, Dad pulled out his pistol and parted Uncle John's hair. He was afraid that he might get in trouble with the law, so he took off to Georgia to work with the loggers, until he thought he would be safe to come back home." Then at another time, "Dad said that he was supposed to fill out his Indian papers, but one of the sisters ran away with the Indian Agent the night before, and he never got to fill them out, so he never had any proof that he was part Cherokee."

Notes from Annie Ruth Hood Ayers: " They, (her parents) were married somewhere on the grounds of the Good Hope Church, near Big Springs, Meigs Co., Tennessee."

Jim, or J C, as he was called by some, worked in logging, when he was younger, and he farmed, hunted wild game, and fished to raise their nine children. Even though times were hard, and money was in short supply, the family never went hungry. When food would get in low supply, he would go on a hunting trip, or set out trot lines, then any extra fish, or other meat, was canned by Myrtle, for later use.

Annie Ruth Hood Ayers: "J C , Myrtle, and the 3 older children, moved from, (located near Hixon), Meigs County, Tennessee, to Jackson County, Alabama, in about 1917. Then about 1921 or 22 he bought a farm there. He moved back to Tennessee on 20 Dec., 1938, when the Guntersville Dam flooded his farm. " This time, he bought a farm in Franklin County, between Walnut Grove and Falls Mill.

Peggy Ayers Rollins remembers: We went to see Nannie and Granddad Hood almost every Sunday, when I was growing up. One of my favorite memories of Granddad, was when he would come home from fishing on his tractor. This was all he ever drove, at that time, and we would wait to hear the tractor comming, and then , sometimes Daddy would walk to the end of the lane with us, and we would get on the tractor, and ride back to the house with him. Then we would follow him out back, and watch him clean the fish, and he always had a stringer full of them, all kinds too, Bass, Catfish, Redhorse, Brim, Crapy, Drum, Sucker, and Carp. What ever he caught, he cleaned and they ate. Sometimes he would give us fish to take home. After he was finished cleaning the fish, then we would head for the barn to help him feed the stock. We would climb up into the corn crib with him, and help him shell corn for the chickens, and hogs, throw the corn shucks to the cows and give them a little corn too, and follow him out to the back of the barn, to 'slop' the hogs. Then there was Ol' Scotty, the horse to feed. These are wonderful memories.

I think that all of his grandchildren liked to get on his lap and listen to his pocket watch. I still liked that even after I was to big to set on his lap. And I especially remember one Christmas when I got a deck of "Ol' Maid" cards, and he and Daddy sat there and played them with me.

When I was really young, Floyd and I both loved to eat opposum. When I would see granddad, in the fall of the year, I would start begging him to get me a opposum, and the next Sunday, when we got there, he would have one cleaned and dressed in the refrigator. Mom would boil and then bake them, and Floyd and I could eat a whole one, by ourselves. Boy, were they ever good! But, then, when I got a little older, and saw the first one that was alive, and Floyd told me what they ate, that was the end of my begging for opposum. That's when I understood why everyone would laugh when I was begging for one.

When I was about twelve, sometime after Nannie had passed away, in June, Grandad wanted Floyd, Phillip, and me to come down to spend the night. That evening, Granddad brought in some country ham from the smoke house, for me to cook the next morning, and told me to make a big pan of bread for the dogs. I was panic stricken, so, I got on the phone and called Mom to see what to do. I had made corn bread before, but only a small pan, and this one was huge! And to top it all off, the ham had mold on it! Mom quickly put my fears to rest, and told me to soak the ham over night, and then how to fix the big pan of corn bread for the dogs. Then, the next morning, Granddad and the boys went out to fed, and I was expected to have breakfast ready when they got back. Well, since I had won first place in the 4H cooking contest for biscuits and corn bread, I guess he thought I would be a whiz in the kitchen, but by the time I got the biscuits made, the ham and eggs fried, the table set, and whatever else that had to be done, I think they were all about to starve to death. This was the first time I had ever had it all to do, and I wasn't like all those girls who was raised on the farm, who had to do this everyday, I was slow! But, it turned out ok, I guess.

I never really knew of Granddad going to church, until after Nannie died, but then he started going, and was baptized a member of the Beans Creek Primitive Baptist Church. We would stop by to pick him up on Sunday morning, and take him to church. His favorite song was "Sweet Hour Of Prayer", and he would always want it to be sung, so he would ask me or any other of the grandchildren who might be there, to request it, then he would tell us to sing real loud.

The old farm house that he and Nannie had lived in, finally got in such bad shape from termites, that Uncle Woodrow finally bought him an old trailer, and moved him into that. It never seemed the same after that. Some how, that old house still seems like a part of me. I can still remember the smell of country ham or chicken frying, wood or coal burning in the heater, and the taste of good cold well water. And I always loved the smell of the old cellar and smoke house. Those things are all a part of the past now.

From Trey Rollins:

Grandaddy Hood- My last memory of Grandaddy Hood is going to visit him in his trailer when I was little. (I think I was still in training pants) I remember he was very old, wore over-alls, and was eating scrambled eggs (more like drinking) from a metal cup.

End Notes

James Cleveland HOOD and Myrtle VARNER were married on 29 Oct 1911 in Meigs Co., TN.

Myrtle VARNER (daughter of Robert Allen VARNER and Emma Hester Angeline MCGUIRE) was born on 31 Aug 1897 in Dayton, Rhea , Tennessee. She died on 24 Jun 1962 in Winchester, Franklin, Tennessee. She was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Franklin, Tennessee.

Notes on My Myrtle VARNER:

Annie Ruth Hood Ayers wrote this about her mother:

When my father and mother moved to Alabama, my mother and her three older children, Robert, Ralph and Thelma, along with my Grandmother Varner and two of her children, Nora and Jessie,
along with the house hold funiture, travled on a steam boat. They stayed with mother's Uncle Jim and Aunt Mary Eleen Varner, in Chattanooga, until the steam boat came. Apparently, my father and Grandfather Varner had gone ahead.

My mother carried what money she had pinned to her under clothes. My Grandmother Varner was so frightened, that she would hardly leave her cabin to eat, for fear of being robbed.

My mother always laughed when she would tell about one night, when they put in at a landing to load a jackass. It must have created some excitement, because everyone piled on deck to watch what was going on.

My mother loved coffee and apparently they didn't get much on the boat. Mama watched the cook pour a cup of coffee and leave it to cool, while he went out on deck to watch. Mama drank his coffee and poured another cup. When he came back, it was still to hot, so he went back. She drank that cup and poured another. This happened four or five times and he never knew what happened to his coffee.

Peggy Ayers Rollins remembers:

During World War II, the four older Hood boys. Robert, Ralph, Joe, and Doyal, were off to fight. In a letter written to Robert, dated August 18, 1942, She writes, (edited for clarification, some of the spelling was changed or sometimes a word added, but the feelings in the letter are the same):

Dear Son,

I will answer your letter. I just came in from Alabama last night. I went over Friday with Joe. Thelma's folks are all well, and we are so far. Joe won't need any money, he has to leave tomorrow for army camp. He got his money and call on Monday, after you at home, and just got himself some slippers. He didn't need any more clothes. It sure hurt Thelma when we left her and I have been so full ( I guess she meant full of emotion) for the last two or three days, till I cant hardly stand it. To think he just got in and has to go again. He has been working so hard trying to get wood and everything done before he had to go. I wouldn't went to Thelma's at all but he wanted me to go so bad with him, I said, I always have a job and just let it all go and went with him. But it seems like I can't take it in the morning when he has to go and Doyal has not heard yet. Ralph has to go 11 Of October. I guess I should be brave and not take it so hard but I would rather be dead than see them go. Joe bought enough asbest shingles to cover the house Thursday. Well, I guess I better close as I got lots to do and don't care much if I don't do anything either. The man got dad's ceader yesterday, and as for other news I don't no anything at all.
answer soon,

With love Mother

Joe and Ralph were in the army, and Doyal went into the Navy. Robert went in last, and was in the SeaBee's. Amazingly enough, all four of the boys returned home safely, but I am sure that it was due, in part, to the the prayers of a faithfull Mother. I know that it greived her heart so much, to have her sons off in foreign lands, fighting in a war, and not hearing any news for months at a time.

Nannie was a big woman, with a sense of humor, and one of the best cooks around. When we would go there on Sundays after church, she would always have a big table full of food. She raised her own garden, so there was always lots of vegetables, whether they were fresh, home canned or frozen. One of my very favorite things, was her home made peach cobbler. They were made from the peaches that she had canned herself, and tasted so good. (When I would call her on the phone, she would ask what I wanted her to fix, and I always asked for the peach cobbler). We always had some kind of meat that they had either raised or Granddad had gotten when he went hunting or fishing.

Nannie always loved dishes, and she had more of them than anyone I think I ever knew. But she had always needed a lot of dishes, because she had such a large family, and she would also cook for the farm hands. I use to really like drinking out of her pretty metal glasses, that she had in several different colors.

There are special little memories of her, that I have. She always wore an apron with a bib on it, and sometimes, she would go out to the hen house to gather the eggs, and she would come back with the tail of the apron held tight, and nestled in the center, was all of the eggs, or, sometimes it would be apples that she had picked out of her orchard. I used to like to watch her, as she would comb her long hair that went almost to the floor, and then she would make two long braids, and carefully wrap it around her head, and pin it in place. I loved to be hugged by her. She was so soft, and it just felt so good. I liked going to the refrigerator with her when it was time for us to go home, and she would say, "Nannie saved you something this week, and then she would give me some tiny little Bantam eggs. And then, one thing that made me feel so special, one fall, she took me to the fence that ran along the front yard, and said she wanted to give me something, and that there was only one, so she was giving it to me. She took a knife, and cut it open for me, and it was so delicious. It was a wild passion fruit. It was the tastiest thing I had ever had, and to this day, I have never had another one, but I have never forgotten the taste, or my Nannie giving it to me. The best I can remember, this was the fall of 1961, just a few months before she died. I kept going back every year to look for another one, but never saw one there again.

Notes on Agatha Elizabeth MOON:

Funeral services were conducted on February 26, 2004, for Hood cousin Agatha Elizabeth Moon, age 91, at the Good Hope Baptist Church in Meigs Co., TN. Agatha was the great-grandaughter of James & Rosanah Cline Hood, grandaughter of James Daniel & Margaret Rebecca Hood, and daughter of James Jacob & Hattie Ethel Hood Moon. She was buried in Good Hope Cemetery near her parents and grandparents. Agatha was born in Meigs County on July 31, 1913. Her long career as a registered nurse was spent in New York City, Los Angeles and Miami. She returned to Meigs County in the mid-1990's to live near her brother, retired riverboat captain Nathaniel "Nate" Moon, and other relatives on the land upon which she grew up along the shore of Chickamauga Lake, across the Tennessee River from the community where James & Rosanah Hood once lived. Agatha always remembered the rural poverty of the area she knew as a child and carried her concern for the poor with her throughout her life. In Miami she was referred to as "Mother Teressa" by many of the people she befriended. In the early 1990's, Agatha called Nate and had him buy a modular home and have it set up near his. A short time later, Nate and other family members were surprised when a moving van rolled in from Florida containing used clothing - enough to fill up the new house - that Agatha had collected to send to the needy people of Meigs County. I haven't thought to ask Nate how they finally got rid of all those clothes before Agatha moved back. Having heard stories about her for many years, it was a thrill for me to meet Cousin Agatha after she moved back to Tennessee. She was a lively, energetic, benevolent lady who will long be remembered by the many people whose lives she touched.

April, 2004 - Note from Floyd Ayers:

Seems that all I have had to report lately is bad news. Upon returning from a camping trip with my son Ben this afternoon, I heard from Hood cousin Wayne Johnson that Nathaniel Moon (Great-grandson of our common Hood ancestors James and Rosannah Hood) died on Wednesday, April 7, and was buried yesterday at Good Hope in Meigs County. Nathaniel was a retired riverboat captain and was a younger brother of Agatha Moon, who died in February. He was a favorite cousin of my Mother's family because of his friendly and fun loving nature. Once, when he was a teenager, he and one of his buddies ran away from home and wound up at my grandparents house, in Middle Tennessee. The story goes that after his Uncle Jim Hood (my Mother's dad) worked their butts off on the farm for a few days, Nate and his friend developed a new appreciation for home and were happy to accept bus tickets back to Meigs County from my granddad.

We will all miss Captain Nate.

Notes on William Clayton (Buster) AYERS:

Granddad Ayers-

I will always remember Granddad waking up early in the morning to shave. I used to get up and "shave" with him, using my fingernails to scrape the shaving cream off until they bought my a play razor. Another thing I remember about Granddad is that he always dressed neatly. Even if he was doing yard work, he had on slacks and a button-up shirt. He was usually pretty jovial but could be stern at times, like when he threatened to take a belt to me and Yuri for making too much noise after we were supposed to be asleep. But even if he was a little irritated, it didn't last long. Probably the most important thing I can recall about him now that I'm an adult is that he loved Grandma. I remember him leaning over and kissing her good-bye on his way to work when I was little. He looked at me and said, " I love your Grandma." It is just one little memory but I never forgot it.

Eulogy for My Dad:

William Clayton Ayers
Feb. 16, 1924-Aug 23, 2001

The greatest man I have ever known, was my Dad. He was born Feb. 16, 1924, in Franklin County., Tennessee to Clarence and Thelma Gulley Ayers.

He learned about hard work at a young age. When his Dad became ill, and while he, "Buster" was only a teenager, he went to work on the family farm, to help his parents, which meant that he would deny himself a high school education, but through his hard work, the family farm was saved.

On Dec. 20, 1941, he married the girl of his dreams, his one and only true love, Ruth Hood. Together, they raised four children, Floyd, Peggy, Phillip and Mechele.

He became very popular with all the nieces who came to spend the night and were treated to "Uncle Busters" homemade biscuits, on Saturday mornings. And on Sunday evenings, he would spend hours playing dominoes with us kids, as Mom cooked supper. To Peggy and Phillip, he was our "Pop-ta-doodlie-bop."

Going to town with Dad, was never a 'hurry up and get what you need and go home' kind of trip, because Dad never went anywhere without finding someone he knew, to talk to. He knew everyone, it seemed, and he never met a stranger in his life. He loved people, and was a very respected man.

He was truely a man of great honesty and integrity, a man without guile. He leaves for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, a great leagacy, his good example.

In my last conversation with him, he told me how he had tried to live by the example, of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and that he did the best he could. I told him, that I had read one day, that "the greatest gift a man can give his children, is to love their Mother." He smiled and said, "I always have, and I always will."

Thanks Dad, you are the greatest man I have ever known.

With love, respect, and much graditude,

Peggy Ann Ayers Rollins
