Peggy,
After 41 yrs., I know the story has changed. What have you ever been told about Ernests' death? His step-grandchildren were told it was a hunting accident.
Mama, Irene & we kids were there about 30 minutes after it happened.

I have heard from Myrtle and Irene and some of the neighbors, and all of the stories have something in common, and that is that he was drunk and threatening to kill Hilda. Then David who was 12 at the time.....so I was told.....picked up the shotgun and shot him. Who knows the real truth???? Another person told me that earlier in the day, they had seen him and some of the younger children walking down the road and that he was drunk and had a shick or something hiting the kids and cursing them. They said they were comming from the dirrection of the store and the kids were carring the bags. Everyone said he had a villante temper when he was drinking, but that he was really a good person when he was sober. Myrtle and Louise talked about it a lot and didn't condone his behaviour, but both said he would do anything he could to help when he was sober. Ms Ruby was sad, but always was very disappointed about his drinking and she always complained about how Alvin had borrowed money from her and never would pay it back....You know, James and I went to see Alvin when he was in the Hospital, just before he died. He looked at us and very matter of factly told us this...." Mama came to see me this morning " He was serious. Shortly after that he died. I have been with people who were dying and they almost always see someone who is dead before they die............Back to Ernest, I had someone tell me another story about Ernest that almost makes me sick to think about it...so for that reason, I think some things are better left to Our Heavenly Father to take care of. I just believe he was a very troubled man and he drank so much because he wanted to try to forget what haunted him.

Peggy,
It's an extremely burning memory to a 10 yr. old.
It was a Saturday & Ernest had worked building on 3 rooms to our old house. I remember after Mama paid him, she asked him not to go out & drink it all up. Ernest said he wouldn't.
That night we settled down to watch a movie after the news. It was a few minutes after 10:30 when the phone rang. Mama answered but I don't remember who called. The next thing I recall is her talking to Irene about driving us over there.
When we arrived, there were lots of people, police cars & the coroners' wagon. Standing near the front door you could see Ernests' feet crossed w/his top shoe off at the entrance to the kitchen. When they brought him out on a stretcher, 1/3 of the sheet was covered in blood. We were all in shock.
I remember someone there talking about " in self defence " but his rifle was 2 rooms away & had not been fired.
The coroner said he was about blown into. He also said Ernest was shot in the back while sitting at the table, Ernest got up, turned, grabbed the gun & was shot again in the stomach.
The next thing I recall was the funeral. It was rough to go through.
The last thing I want to mention is that we were on a 5 party line at the time. There was at least 1 conversation overheard about his death before it happened. I didn't find this out 'till a few weeks ago.
A few years later the killer confessed (while drunk) to Jackie. Almost forgot, Ernest did go to the store, bought a six pack of bottles but only drank one.

I guess that God is the only one who knows the whole truth, huh? I was in a class with a girl who told me a little about it, but I don't remember what now. I am glad I wasn't up there at the time. It must have been so hard on everyone. All I can remember is how everyone had a different twist on the whole thing. It is to bad that things like that go on. I do seem to remember that one of the older boys was said to have done it, but I don't know which one.
Peggy Peggy,
The last 2 things I remember is the one that did it was 19 at the time & it was planned that the one that was 12 take the blame. We all pay for our mistakes & the past does come back to haunt us.
I was just asked the question "what happened" out of the blue. Hadn't thought about it in years. Memories I'd like to forget & do for a while 'till they come back to haunt me.
Which brings up an interesting question. Do the good die young or are they all bad & no one really knows for sure?

Granny Rollins- I used to love spending the night with her on Fridays. We would watch Knightrider and Remington Steele and I would usually bring one of my Star Wars toys. We would plays games like War, Pig-pen, and Hang-man. We would talk until real late at night. I liked hearing stories about life during WW2 or when Dad, Uncle Melvin, Aunt Mary, and Aunt Cathy were growing up. She was always in pain but didn't really complain. She was independent too. She wanted to stay in her house and take care of herself and not be "too much trouble" to anyone. She had this long wooden stick with a notch cut in it and she could use to open her refridgerator, turn on the heater, and ocassionally get after Randy, Ronnie, or Bubba. Back when she had both legs and was on crutches she chased me down one day and swatted me for kicking her stove. Parents: Francis Asbury CALDWELL and Ruby May MILLER.

Peggy,
I think I figured out the picture. They're all dressed up because of a wedding. Mary & Simon were married in 1920. I don't know why I didn't figure it out before. Simon is the one that doesn't look like a Caldwell. Frank had the mustache, Dewitt had a flat chin & so forth. This may be the only pic of Simon. This has bugged me since I saw it. Talk later.
