James Cleveland HOOD was born on 28 Dec 1886 in , Meigs , Tennessee. He died on 31 Jan 1974 in , Franklin, Tennessee. He was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Franklin, Tennessee. Told to Annie Ruth Hood Ayers, by her Dad, James Cleveland Hood:
James Cleveland and his brother John went to visit his Grandmother Hood (Rosannah Cline Hood) one Christmas, when he was about 8 or 9 years old. He said his mother had made some pies and cakes and put them in a bushel basket and they slipped a pole through the handles of the basket, to carry it. He said that two of the uncles were there at the time, and that his Grandmother was full blood Cherokee.

This story was told to Peggy Ayers Rollins by her Uncle Woodrow Hood:

"When Dad (James Cleveland) was younger, he and his brother John got into some kind of disagreement, so, Dad pulled out his pistol and parted Uncle John's hair. He was afraid that he might get in trouble with the law, so he took off to Georgia to work with the loggers, until he thought he would be safe to come back home." Then at another time, "Dad said that he was supposed to fill out his Indian papers, but one of the sisters ran away with the Indian Agent the night before, and he never got to fill them out, so he never had any proof that he was part Cherokee."

Notes from Annie Ruth Hood Ayers: " They, (her parents) were married somewhere on the grounds of the Good Hope Church, near Big Springs, Meigs Co., Tennessee."

Jim, or J C, as he was called by some, worked in logging, when he was younger, and he farmed, hunted wild game, and fished to raise their nine children. Even though times were hard, and money was in short supply, the family never went hungry. When food would get in low supply, he would go on a hunting trip, or set out trot lines, then any extra fish, or other meat, was canned by Myrtle, for later use.

Annie Ruth Hood Ayers: "J C , Myrtle, and the 3 older children, moved from, (located near Hixon), Meigs County, Tennessee, to Jackson County, Alabama, in about 1917. Then about 1921 or 22 he bought a farm there. He moved back to Tennessee on 20 Dec., 1938, when the Guntersville Dam flooded his farm. " This time, he bought a farm in Franklin County, between Walnut Grove and Falls Mill.

Peggy Ayers Rollins remembers: We went to see Nannie and Granddad Hood almost every Sunday, when I was growing up. One of my favorite memories of Granddad, was when he would come home from fishing on his tractor. This was all he ever drove, at that time, and we would wait to hear the tractor comming, and then , sometimes Daddy would walk to the end of the lane with us, and we would get on the tractor, and ride back to the house with him. Then we would follow him out back, and watch him clean the fish, and he always had a stringer full of them, all kinds too, Bass, Catfish, Redhorse, Brim, Crapy, Drum, Sucker, and Carp. What ever he caught, he cleaned and they ate. Sometimes he would give us fish to take home. After he was finished cleaning the fish, then we would head for the barn to help him feed the stock. We would climb up into the corn crib with him, and help him shell corn for the chickens, and hogs, throw the corn shucks to the cows and give them a little corn too, and follow him out to the back of the barn, to 'slop' the hogs. Then there was Ol' Scotty, the horse to feed. These are wonderful memories.

I think that all of his grandchildren liked to get on his lap and listen to his pocket watch. I still liked that even after I was to big to set on his lap. And I especially remember one Christmas when I got a deck of "Ol' Maid" cards, and he and Daddy sat there and played them with me.

When I was really young, Floyd and I both loved to eat opposum. When I would see granddad, in the fall of the year, I would start begging him to get me a opposum, and the next Sunday, when we got there, he would have one cleaned and dressed in the refrigator. Mom would boil and then bake them, and Floyd and I could eat a whole one, by ourselves. Boy, were they ever good! But, then, when I got a little older, and saw the first one that was alive, and Floyd told me what they ate, that was the end of my begging for opposum. That's when I understood why everyone would laugh when I was begging for one.

When I was about twelve, sometime after Nannie had passed away, in June, Grandad wanted Floyd, Phillip, and me to come down to spend the night. That evening, Granddad brought in some country ham from the smoke house, for me to cook the next morning, and told me to make a big pan of bread for the dogs. I was panic stricken, so, I got on the phone and called Mom to see what to do. I had made corn bread before, but only a small pan, and this one was huge! And to top it all off, the ham had mold on it! Mom quickly put my fears to rest, and told me to soak the ham over night, and then how to fix the big pan of corn bread for the dogs. Then, the next morning, Granddad and the boys went out to fed, and I was expected to have breakfast ready when they got back. Well, since I had won first place in the 4H cooking contest for biscuits and corn bread, I guess he thought I would be a whiz in the kitchen, but by the time I got the biscuits made, the ham and eggs fried, the table set, and whatever else that had to be done, I think they were all about to starve to death. This was the first time I had ever had it all to do, and I wasn't like all those girls who was raised on the farm, who had to do this everyday, I was slow! But, it turned out ok, I guess.

I never really knew of Granddad going to church, until after Nannie died, but then he started going, and was baptized a member of the Beans Creek Primitive Baptist Church. We would stop by to pick him up on Sunday morning, and take him to church. His favorite song was "Sweet Hour Of Prayer", and he would always want it to be sung, so he would ask me or any other of the grandchildren who might be there, to request it, then he would tell us to sing real loud.

The old farm house that he and Nannie had lived in, finally got in such bad shape from termites, that Uncle Woodrow finally bought him an old trailer, and moved him into that. It never seemed the same after that. Some how, that old house still seems like a part of me. I can still remember the smell of country ham or chicken frying, wood or coal burning in the heater, and the taste of good cold well water. And I always loved the smell of the old cellar and smoke house. Those things are all a part of the past now.

Trey Rollins:
Grandaddy Hood- My last memory of Grandaddy Hood is going to visit him in his trailer when I was little. (I think I was still in training pants) I remember he was very old, wore over-alls, and was eating scrambled eggs (more like drinking) from a metal cup. Parents: James Daniel HOOD and Margaret Rebecca EMORY.

James Daniel HOOD was born on 2 Jun 1853 in , Rhea, Tennessee. He died on 29 Oct 1929 in , Meigs , Tennessee. He was described as Tall, slender, and very handsome. As far as anyone knows, there was never a picture taken of James Daniel Hood, and I have only talked to two of his grandchildren who ever knew him.

The following, is taken from a letter between William Floyd Ayers, and sister Peggy Ann Ayers Rollins:

James Daniel Hood died 29 Oct. 1929, and I don't know if they lived in Rhea County, at that time or not, but I assume that they did. (They lived on their farm in the Big Springs Community of Meigs County. James Daniel Hood was standing up, driving a wagon pulled by a team of horses. The horses spooked at something and jumped. He fell backward and struck his head on a farm implement being carried in the wagon and died a few days later after being carried home and put to bed. This I got from several sources, including his grandson, John Austin Moon, b. Jan. 2, 1919, who visited him on his death bed. F.A.) Mother said that by the time the letter came to Granddad Hood (James Cleveland, then living in Jackson Co., AL., south of the Tennessee River.), that he had already been buried, but that Granddad went anyway, and that he went back again in the spring, and when he returned home that time, he brought Great Grandma (Margaret Rebecca Hood) with him. Mother said that she stayed there with them for about three weeks, but that she wanted to go back home, and would have go back sooner, but it took time for the letter to get back to Uncle John to come for her, and that he came by boat, and took her back home. (I called Mother for clarification about this. Granddad Hood brought her in by boat, which he paddled up Coon Creek from the Caisson place. He had prearranged with Uncle John, who also lived in Jackson Co. across the Tennessee River from our grandparents, to pick her up in three weeks. When she wanted to leave early, they pretended to write a letter to Uncle John to come and get her. Mother's oldest brother, Robert was sent toward the post office with instructions to tear the letter up, instead of mailing it, which he did, because they wanted Grandma Hood to stay longer. When the appointed time came for Uncle John to take her back home to Meigs Co., Tennessee, in his car, Granddad Hood took her in a wagon to Coffee's Ferry on the Tennessee River to meet John. F.A.)
