Funeral services were conducted on February 26, 2004, for Hood cousin Agatha Elizabeth Moon, age 91, at the Good Hope Baptist Church in Meigs Co., TN. Agatha was the great-grandaughter of James & Rosanah Cline Hood, grandaughter of James Daniel & Margaret Rebecca Hood, and daughter of James Jacob & Hattie Ethel Hood Moon. She was buried in Good Hope Cemetery near her parents and grandparents. Agatha was born in Meigs County on July 31, 1913. Her long career as a registered nurse was spent in New York City, Los Angeles and Miami. She returned to Meigs County in the mid-1990's to live near her brother, retired riverboat captain Nathaniel "Nate" Moon, and other relatives on the land upon which she grew up along the shore of Chickamauga Lake, across the Tennessee River from the community where James & Rosanah Hood once lived. Agatha always remembered the rural poverty of the area she knew as a child and carried her concern for the poor with her throughout her life. In Miami she was referred to as "Mother Teressa" by many of the people she befriended. In the early 1990's, Agatha called Nate and had him buy a modular home and have it set up near his. A short time later, Nate and other family members were surprised when a moving van rolled in from Florida containing used clothing - enough to fill up the new house - that Agatha had collected to send to the needy people of Meigs County. I haven't thought to ask Nate how they finally got rid of all those clothes before Agatha moved back. Having heard stories about her for many years, it was a thrill for me to meet Cousin Agatha after she moved back to Tennessee. She was a lively, energetic, benevolent lady who will long be remembered by the many people whose lives she touched. He is on oxygen full-time, and can't say more than a few words at a time. His mother, Peggy's & my Great-aunt Ethel Hood Moon, grandaughter of James & Rosanah Hood, was said to have been the most beautiful girl in Meigs County around 1910. A photo of the Moon family made in 1928 is posted on this website. Nate is the baby in the picture. One of Nate's favorite stories is about Naomi Judd's mother working as the cook on his riverboat on the Ohio River. She married a member of the crew, and Nate has a picture taken at the wedding of himself with Naomi and Winona Judd, along with Naomi's mother and step-father. Parents: James Jacob MOON and Hattie Ethel HOOD. |
