Myrtle VARNER was born on 31 Aug 1897 in Dayton, Rhea , Tennessee. She died on 24 Jun 1962 in Winchester, Franklin, Tennessee. She was buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Franklin, Tennessee. Annie Ruth Hood Ayers wrote this about her mother:
When my father and mother moved to Alabama, my mother and her three older children, Robert, Ralph and Thelma, along with my Grandmother Varner and two of her children, Nora and Jessie,
along with the house hold funiture, travled on a steam boat. They stayed with mother's Uncle Jim and Aunt Mary Eleen Varner, in Chattanooga, until the steam boat came. Apparently, my father and Grandfather Varner had gone ahead.
My mother carried what money she had pinned to her under clothes. My Grandmother Varner was so frightened, that she would hardly leave her cabin to eat, for fear of being robbed.
My mother always laughed when she would tell about one night, when they put in at a landing to load a jackass. It must have created some excitement, because everyone piled on deck to watch what was going on.
My mother loved coffee and apparently they didn't get much on the boat. Mama watched the cook pour a cup of coffee and leave it to cool, while he went out on deck to watch. Mama drank his coffee and poured another cup. When he came back, it was still to hot, so he went back. She drank that cup and poured another. This happened four or five times and he never knew what happened to his coffee.

Peggy Ayers Rollins:
During World War II, the four older Hood boys. Robert, Ralph, Joe, and Doyal, were off to fight. In a letter written to Robert, dated August 18, 1942, She writes,
(edited for clarification, some of the spelling was changed or sometimes a word added, but the feelings in the letter are the same .)

Dear Son,
I will answer your letter. I just came in from Alabama last night. I went over Friday with Joe. Thelma's folks are all well, and we are so far. Joe won't need any money, he has to leave tomorrow for army camp. He got his money and call on Monday, after you at home, and just got himself some slippers. He didn't need any more clothes. It sure hurt Thelma when we left her and I have been so full ( I guess she meant full of emotion) for the last two or three days, till I cant hardly stand it. To think he just got in and has to go again. He has been working so hard trying to get wood and everything done before he had to go. I wouldn't went to Thelma's at all but he wanted me to go so bad with him, I said, I always have a job and just let it all go and went with him. But it seems like I can't take it in the morning when he has to go and Doyal has not heard yet. Ralph has to go 11 Of October. I guess I should be brave and not take it so hard but I would rather be dead than see them go. Joe bought enough asbest shingles to cover the house Thursday. Well, I guess I better close as I got lots to do and don't care much if I don't do anything either. The man got dad's ceader yesterday, and as for other news I don't no anything at all.
answer soon,
with love Mother

Joe and Ralph were in the army, and Doyal went into the Navy. Robert went in last, and was in the Sea B's. Amazingly enough, all four of the boys returned home saftly, but I am sure that it was due, in part, the the prayers of a faithfull Mother. I know that it greived her heart so much, to have her sons off in foreign lands, fighting in a war, and not hearing any news for months at a time.

Nannie was a big woman, with a sense of humor, and one of the best cooks around. When we would go there on Sundays after church, she would always have a big table full of food. She raised her own garden, so there was always lots of vegetables, whether they were fresh, home canned or frozen. One of my very favorite things, was her home made peach cobbler. They were made from the peaches that she had canned herself, and tasted so good. (When I would call her on the phone, she would ask what I wanted her to fix, and I always asked for the peach cobbler). We always had some kind of meat that they had either raised or Granddad had gotten when he went hunting or fishing.

Nannie always loved dishes, and she had more of them than anyone I think I ever knew. But she had always needed a lot of dishes, because she had such a large family, and she would also cook for the farm hands. I use to really like drinking out of her pretty metal glasses, that she had in several different colors.

There are special little memories of her, that I have. She always wore and apron with a bib on it, and sometimes, she would go out to the hen house to gather the eggs, and she would come back with the tail of the apron held tight, and nestled in the center, was all of the eggs, or, sometimes it would be apples that she had picked out of her orchard. I use to like to watch her, as she would comb her long hair that went almost to the floor, and then she would make two long braids, and carefully wrap it around her head, and pin it in place. I loved to be hugged by her. She was so soft, and it just felt so good. I liked going to the refrigator with her when it was time for us to go home, and she would say, "Nannie saved you something this week, and then she would give me some tiny little Bantam eggs. And then, one thing that made me feel so special, one fall, she took me to the fence that ran along the front yard, and said she wanted to give me something, and that there was only one, so she was giving it to me. She took a knife, and cut it open for me, and it was so delicious. It was a wild passion fruit. It was the tastiest thing I had ever had, and to this day, I have never had another one, but I have never forgotten the taste, or my Nannie giving it to me. The best I can remember, this was the fall of 1961, just a few months before she died. I kept going back every year to look for another one, but never saw one there again.
